What to do with our dogs…?

We have a 2 1/2 year old Siberian Husky and a 1 year old Boxer. Normally, they are very docile and only get really excited and go crazy when we’re playing with them or when we’re outside. However, when we leave them home alone, they tear up anything and everything they can find. We used to keep them in kennels, but they have outgrown them. Now we keep them locked up in the bedroom when we have to go somewhere. They have chewed on our brand new wooden bed frame (4 times now), chewed up a pair of my pants, and have now torn up our wicker laundry basket. As soon as we let them out, they run to the other room and won’t come back to the bedroom. They know they’ve done something bad and are going to get in trouble; yet the next time we leave, they do it all over again….Does anyone have any advice as to what we can do to get them to stop destroying things while we’re gone?

They need to be kennelled. Buy them bigger kennels.

As for why they are doing it, they are doing it because they are bored. A bored dog gets destructive. One thing you can do to alleviate the boredom is make sure they get LOTS of exercise. A tired dog doesn’t get bored, it just sleeps.

If they have fixated on one or two things they especially love to chew, try spraying Kennick’s Bitter Apple spray on those things. Or, if the things are of a nature that they would not be ruined by doing so, wipe some Vicks Vapo Rub on the stuff they like to chew. The will NOT want to chew anything that has Vicks on it.
